Angioplasty with Dr. Shahrokh Taghavi
What Is Angioplasty?
Angioplasty, also known as balloon angioplasty or percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), is a minimally invasive endovascular procedure used to widen narrowed or blocked blood vessels. One of its most important uses is treating atherosclerosis, the narrowing and hardening of the arteries.
A deflated balloon on a catheter (cardiac catheterization) is guided over a guide wire into the narrowed or blocked vessel and then inflated to a set size. The inflated balloon widens the vessel and the surrounding muscular wall, improving blood flow. To keep the vessel open, a stent may be placed at the same time, after which the balloon is deflated and removed.
Compared with surgery, angioplasty is a lower-risk treatment option, but it should be performed by a cardiologist experienced in the procedure. In inexperienced hands it can lead to serious complications.

How to Choose a Cardiologist
Finding the right cardiologist
Choosing a good cardiologist in Tehran or any other city often feels confusing, but it doesn’t have to. Instead of getting lost in countless websites and apps, start the traditional way: trust the experience of others. Friends and family can help you narrow your search.
Then check what you hear: a doctor’s track record and the standing of the hospitals and clinics they work with matter a great deal. Dr. Shahrokh Taghavi practises at reputable hospitals and specialist heart clinics in Tehran.
Finding a good cardiologist in Tehran
Many doctors describe themselves as good cardiologists. To judge that claim, several criteria matter, as discussed in Persian-language directories such as Pezeshka’s list of leading cardiologists in Iran:
- The reputation and size of the hospitals where the doctor practises
- Their specialist qualifications and the university they trained at
- Which insurance plans are accepted
- How far the clinic or hospital is from where you live
